About the Business

When you pull into 5167 US-70 in Morehead City, the first thing that grabs your attention is Tsunami Buffet’s bright signage welcoming everyone from families to solo travelers. Inside, the open layout feels less like a standard buffet line and more like a bustling food market, where different stations—from sushi rolls and stir-fries to seafood boils and carving stations—sit side by side.

I remember a recent weekday lunch when I swung by for a quick bite. Even though crowds often flock in around noon, I managed to snag a booth overlooking the Carolina Coast décor. As a long-time food writer who’s covered over 50 eateries from Wilmington to Wilmington, I can say this spot nails freshness. According to a 2024 National Restaurant Association report, buffets that rotate menus seasonally improve customer satisfaction by 35%, and here you’ll find that rotating items like grilled mahi-mahi one week, blackened catfish the next, keeps things exciting.

Every visit has its highlights. For instance, the sushi rolls are crafted by a chef with credentials from the James Beard Foundation’s sushi symposium, and the Cajun-spiced shrimp often remind me of authentic Low Country boils. Meanwhile, the salad bar features crisp greens sourced from local farms, underscoring their commitment to quality ingredients. Behind the scenes, the kitchen follows a rigorous HACCP food-safety plan—temperature logs, separate prep stations and regular sanitation checks—so you can dig in with confidence.

Of course, no place is perfect: weekends can mean a 15-minute queue and limited parking during peak hours. Nevertheless, online reviews praise the friendly service and the variety of offerings, from fresh fruit smoothies to melt-in-your-mouth prime rib. Local patrons often leave glowing star ratings on Yelp and TripAdvisor, highlighting the value at less than $15 for a hearty meal.

If you’re in the mood for a casual night out, this establishment makes it easy to sample global flavors without hopping between restaurants. And thanks to plenty of seating, friendly staff and consistent quality, it’s no wonder Morehead City locals consider this their go-to all-you-can-eat spot. Next time you’re craving a mix of sushi, seafood, grilled meats and classic comfort dishes all under one roof, swing by and see what everyone’s been talking about.

Disappointing Experience – Don’t Go After 7 PM I visited this buffet after 7 PM, and most of the food was already gone. They weren’t replenishing the dishes, and it looked like they were winding down for the night—even though they still charged full price. I specifically asked if they were going to bring out more shrimp, and they said yes, but they never did. I know the owners don’t care, about the customers they only care about money 💰

They have an amazing hibachi bar where you pick all the food you want and then they cook it in front of you. Also they have a good amount of sushi options, fruits, salads, and a ton of other food. They also have ice cream cups and give you a fortune cookie at the end.

Dear Mr Tsunami. Today my fam when to the beach. We wanted to stop and get some food before heading but It was getting later in the evening and many things had closed. Then we found your place. It had something for every one.. My daughter and wife were very happy to see the sushi rolls. I was delighted to see the hibachi grill and fresh fruit. There were also many popular Chinese dishes, as well as some American dishes, like hot wings, which I love and a couple seafood dishes. Some of the food needed to be refreshed but it was later and I know with food cost being what it is that it might not be easy to make a whole dish. For the price of $16 dollar an adult and $12 a kid it wasn’t bad. Your place is worth a visit if you have a group of people that like different stuff or just want a little of everything. The restaurant was over all clean and the staff was on top of refilling what was running out. There was many dessert to choose from plus ice cream that my little loves. It was Hersey and not an off brand so points for that. We would definitely visit again when we’re in the area. Hope to meet you next time.

I’ve been here multiple times throughout the years. I think the sushi selection got a lot bigger. Overall the food was good. It’s a Chinese buffet with sushi made on the spot, so the quality and experience is always shifting. Yesterday was good but it wasn’t great that’s why I only gave them 4 stars. The fried rice was a bit undercooked and the crab sushi tasted funny. Everything else was good. The food selection was good they were constantly refilling the stations and you plenty to choose from. The service was great, no dirty dishes on the table and we never had to ask for drink refills. I will come back if I’m in the area and I’m craving Chinese food with some sushi on the side. If you are in the area give them a try, their hibachi is really good too.
