Clinton Hill Auto Service

About the Business

Tucked away at Clinton Hill Auto Service, located at 105 Steuben St, Brooklyn, NY 11205, there’s more than just the sound of wrenches and engine diagnostics. This place gives off the kind of energy you want when your car’s having a rough day—skilled hands, straight talk, and a surprisingly welcoming vibe for an auto shop. It’s the kind of spot that earns trust the old-fashioned way: one honest repair at a time.

Most folks around Clinton Hill know that finding a reliable car repair shop isn’t as simple as Googling “best mechanic near me.” It’s about experience. The kind that comes from watching your mechanic listen closely, pop the hood, and diagnose a rattling noise like a seasoned doctor reading an X-ray. And here, that’s exactly what happens. I brought in a 2013 Honda Accord with transmission issues, fully expecting a drawn-out, expensive process. Instead, I got a detailed walkthrough of the problem, a fair quote, and the job done in a day. No up-selling. No mystery charges. Just real work, done right.

The staff at this location aren’t just mechanics—they’re problem-solvers. Whether it’s brake replacement, AC system repair, or routine maintenance, they approach each car like it’s their own. And that mindset is clear not just from my visit, but from the consistent reviews posted online. You’ll see plenty of locals talking about how the team here explains things in plain English, and how they’re willing to show you the issue in person before suggesting repairs.

Another thing that stands out? Their transparency. If they say it’ll be ready by 5 PM, it’s ready by 5 PM. If something unexpected comes up, you’ll get a call—not a surprise when you come to pick up the car. That kind of clear communication builds confidence fast, especially for people who might not know much about cars but want to feel like they’re not being taken for a ride.

From a technical standpoint, the garage itself is well-equipped, clean, and organized. That might not seem like a big deal, but it reflects how seriously they take their work. Tools are where they should be, diagnostics are quick and accurate, and their parts come from trusted suppliers.

It’s also worth mentioning that Clinton Hill Auto Service operates as a registered establishment and point of interest in the neighborhood—not just a random corner shop. People don’t just come here for convenience, they come back for service. They trust the expertise, and they appreciate the attitude. When you combine years of hands-on experience with a team that genuinely cares, that’s when you get a place that people recommend to friends, family, and even strangers online.

So if your car’s giving you trouble and you’re anywhere near Brooklyn, this is one of those rare spots that still values doing the job right, earning respect through work, and treating people like neighbors.

Came in as an emergency to fill up steering wheel fluid. We already had the funnel and the fluid with us. The owner was rude from the very beginning and yelled at us to leave. "We don't have the manpower. These guys are leaving." We were told to leave as though we were trespassing. Would not recommend this place at all.

On the phone with them and were incredibly rude from the getco, for no apparent reason. I was asking a simple question and dude was just lashing out. Don’t even understand how they have someone like that answering the phone. Would definitely NOT go here.

Alright, buckle up. I came in here for an inspection that happened to coincide with my check engine light being on. They took a look at my car and told me I'd need to replace my catalytic converter and O-ring and it would cost me $1700. They said I had no choice but to go through with this if I wanted to pass the inspection since a car can't pass if the check engine light is on, even though my car was running just fine, and the catalytic converter issue just affected its' emissions. I got a second opinion elsewhere and they asked me how old my car was. Since it was 25 years old it turns out that it was actually exempt from needing to pass an emissions test (just a safety test) which meant that I actually didn't need to fix the check engine light to pass the test. I called this shop back and told them this information and they fully denied it. I came back to collect my car to take it to the other place and had a frustrating conversation with them where, once I pulled up the relevant state laws on my phone and pointed them out they finally agreed that I was right, whoops. They ended up running my inspection and passing me on the spot. After all that they charged me an additional $100 for the diagnostic even though if they actually knew what they were doing and were on top of the auto laws they would've known that I didn't need to go through all that. I asked if they'd be willing to give me a discount given the context and was refused. So all in all, can't really say I recommend this shop.

Buyer beware. These guys regularly work on the sidewalk and in front of private driveways which means your vehicle might get TOWED or worse damaged by angry neighbors. They dump toxic fluids directly onto the sidewalk and street and their work spaces are constantly in violation. Buyer beware!!
